Buxton C.C. v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

Nomads lose by 3 wickets in a tight finish at Buxton

The historic, well tended Buxton ground looked a picture in the May sunshine as Lichfield Nomads won the toss and elected to bat. Gardner and Rolfe saw off the opening bowlers with a stand of 26 at a steady three an over. The first and second change bowlers, twin sisters A. and S. Tremble, claimed the first three wickets with tight and accurate bowling. (Gardner was out to a stunning low catch by White fielding at short mid off). Moss looked in good form for his 13 runs but it was Clenton (36) and Gibson (52 not out) who really took the attack to Buxton in the second half of the innings and along with contributions from Mountford and Cartwright they helped to take the score to a competitive 171 at the end of the 40th over. Buxton shared the bowling around, with ten bowlers being used in total.

After struggling to find his length in his first over, opening bowler I Hughes’s next 5 overs went for only 5 runs. Gibson at the other end was equally tight conceding only 7 off six. Mountford’s spin claimed 2 wickets and Clenton’s sharp work in the field ran out Bouvier. Oddy, was eventually out with Bastable taking a remarkable diving catch off the bowling of R Hughes. When Cartwright trapped Denton LBW Buxton were 7 down with less than a 100 on the board. Victory seemed in sight for the Nomads but Porter and White had other ideas and gradually started to build a partnership . White was finding the boundary with powerful shots square of the wicket. The bowlers were unlucky in that shots in the air were just not going to hand. The target was reached in the final over of the innings.

The Nomads were disappointed to loose the game from what seemed to be a good position. But credit has to be given to the two lower order batters from Buxton who took the game away from Nomads to secure a narrow win. It was a high scoring, enjoyable and competitive game between two well matched sides with all players making contributions and showing application on a very hot day.
