Stoneygate C.C. v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

Nomads play host to Stoneygate

Stoneygate won the toss and chose to bat first. Hughes and Cogzell opened the bowling. When Forster skied a ball from Hughes to mid on Loxley dropped the catch but had the presence of mind to throw to the bowler’s end, running Forster out. This bought N Gutteridge to the crease. He and Morbey gradually started to accumulate runs. The accuracy of Hughes and the swing bowling of Cogzell were restricting the scoring. Hughes claimed Morley’s wicket, caught behind and then dismissed Raj and Knight shortly afterwards. After 20 overs Stoneygate had 64 runs on the board and the Nomads felt they were well in the game.

However the arrival of C Gutteridge to the crease heralded the start of a match winning partnership. Both batsmen upped the rate with shots around the wicket. The Nomads were having to work hard in the field. Scurlock in particular saved a lot of runs at deep cover / square leg. The bowlers stuck at it - O’ Brien showed pace - and several shots went in the air but more often than not didn’t go to hand. Both Gutteridges ended up with 91 not out to set a challenging target of 218.

Loxley got the Nomads off to a positive start, quickly getting to 16 before he was caught by O‘Brien ( fielding as substitute) at mid off. Bastable came in and showed good shot selection against accurate bowling. When he was out for a well made 21, he was quickly followed by O’Brien and Parsonage to give bowler Pisani a hat trick. The Nomads never really recovered from this with remaining wickets falling cheaply. It was left to Scurlock, who carried his bat for a battling 11 not out to restore some sort of respectability to the innings. But a total of 70 was well below par and Stoneygate’s win was well deserved.
