Old Hill v Lichfield Nomads

Lichfield Nomads original game was cancelled so they were grateful to Old Hill who hastily arranged a second fixture against their Development XI. Nomads won the toss and elected to bowl first. The opening attack of Hughes and Mahmood quickly got into the groove, bowling line and length. The Old Hill openers were batting sensibly with a stand of 31 until Mahmood claimed the wicket of his namesake in the 8th over. Mahmood bowled 2 beamers at the opener James in his final over, which meant that Loxley bowled the last ball ( and nearly claimed a wicket.)

3rd and 4th change bowlers Mountford and Jordan bowled tightly, with the ball not quite coming through on a drying pitch. James batted well for his 36 until he was caught at mid wicket by Mountford, diving low, off the bowling of Fearon. Wickets started to fall regularly. Andrews was run out with a direct hit from Mahmood fielding in the deep. After 30 overs Old Hill were 110 for 6. But the senior players, batting down the order, upped the scoring rate dramatically in the last ten overs. Davenport came in and proceeded to hit three towering sixes. He was well caught on the boundary by Shah off the fourth ball of his innings to give Kalpesh his second wicket in the over. Keeling-Wright made a quick- fire 29 until he was bowled by the accurate Fearon. Old Hill’s total of 200 seemed about par for the course.

Munir claimed the first Nomad wicket with a good leg cutter which bowled Loxley. Incoming batsman Mahmood hit the pacy Andrews for several boundaries with controlled drives and he, supported by Gardner, took the score to 45 before Gardner was out to a good catch from Keeling-Wright at leg slip off the bowling of Davenport. Bastable came in and showed attacking intent from the start. He and Mahmood had taken the score to 79, when Mahmood retired on 52 not out.The Nomads were 92 for 3 at drinks which showed some promise. But when Bastable was out LBW to Davenport for 21 (including five 4’s ) the scoring rate slowed and wickets started to fall. Rolfe (10 ) showed application and Jordan shone briefly with a four to square leg but soon Mahmood was back at the crease and the target was 8 runs an over. He eventually was caught on the boundary for a well made 58 with the Nomads’ total on 121. The game was played in a good spirit, Old Hill bowled well and fielded enthusiastically and were worth their win.

This was a late fixture change as Bloxwich were unable to field a side. Old Hill kindly stepped in at short notice to host us as a replacement.(Ed.)
